A black cat couldn't resist the scent of her neighbor's delicious dinner that she smelled from her bed.

In a TikTok video, the adorable cat's parent caught the moment the cat smelled something amazing from the neighbor's house. In the video, the cat had her eyes closed and tilted her head up slightly as she smelled the food. In the text overlay, her parent wrote, "crying because what do you mean her little brain thought the neighbor's cooking smelled good."

All about a cat's sense of smell

A cat is best known to have a very keen sense of smell. According to Rover, a cat's sense of smell "is known to be 14 times stronger than that of humans."

While there's more research that needs to be done around exactly how far away a cat can smell something, some scientists estimate that they can smell their food as far as "126โ€“154 feet away."

Other studies have shown that cats can distinguish between two smells due to the presence of V1R receptors. Humans typically have 2 of these receptors, while cats have over 30.

A cat's sense of smell is also important for them to better understand the world around them. Rover reports that their sense of smell allows them to detect danger in their surroundings, find food, and it can even help them find a mate.

Along with smelling the world around them, cats are also able to detect different pheromones from other cats. Pheromones are usually released from "their paws, their faces, hindquarters, and tail," and their smell allows them to detect other cats and also mark their own territories.

With their keen sense of smell, pet parents need to be vigilant about certain perfumes or other scents that could overwhelm or upset their cat. Some strong-smelling things like "perfumes, odor eliminators, strong citrus scents, and cigarette smoke" are known to be "offensive" to cats.
