New Mercedes EV Can Hit 60 MPH In 2 Seconds

The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT is a massive departure from the four-door model's previous iteration. Gone is the old twin-turbo V8, replaced instead with an electric drivetrain and radical new looks. The GT promises more power and better acceleration over the old V8, in addition to a near-nauseating 0-60 mph sprint in just two seconds.

The exterior receives a full redesign, heavily inspired by the AMG GT XX concept from a while back. That's most evident in the grille and the similar sloping roofline. The production model must make do with a glass rear window, though, in lieu of the concept's screen. Two new active aero elements also add downforce. An active wing and a new extending rear diffuser can be manipulated at any time by the driver or the car's computers. The result is a staggeringly low coefficient of drag, contributing to the car's estimated 435 miles of range.

A new infotainment setup features an angled driver display that flows into a screen for the passenger, while physical controls have been almost entirely eliminated from the interior. Mercedes has a new Sky Control panoramic glass roof, which features embedded LEDs displaying the AMG logo. The glass is also electrochromatic, which allows it to switch between a clear and frosted finish at the push of a button.

As for the powertrain, the battery system is all-new, featuring updated battery cells with cooling for each cell. It's more efficient, and the cells themselves are smaller and slimmer than before, which leads to greater energy density in the pack. Charging and range shouldn't be a concern. In addition to 435 miles of range, the GT can also charge at an absurd 600 kilowatts, which will add more than 286 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

The 106-kilowatt-hour pack powers three electric motors, one at the front and two at the rear. All told, the motors make 805 horsepower and a monumental 1,328 pound-feet of torque in "base" GT55 trims. GT53 models net 1,153 hp and 1,475 lb-ft of torque. Miss the V8? The GT can still mimic it with speakers in Sport+ mode. Pricing has yet to be announced.
