Two rescue puppies who were found together and adopted got to reunite for the first time since the shelter, and they appeared to recognize each other instantly.

When Zack Goldwasser, 32, rescued his dog Aspen, a husky, Belgian Malinois and pit bull mix, he knew she had a difficult start to life. Along with her mom and three siblings, Aspen was found in the backyard of a home, having been abandoned by their previous owners. Thankfully, the dogs were rescued and taken in by UFAR Animals Rescue in Margate, Florida.

After adopting Aspen (who was previously named Mimosa), Goldwasser told Newsweek that he "hadn't heard anything" about any of her siblings. The Fort Lauderdale resident hoped that they too had been granted a second chance, and it turned out, one was much closer than expected.

"My friend was at a dog park in Boca and her dog was playing with another puppy," Goldwasser said. "She was talking to the puppy's owner and slowly started to hear similarities between Aspen and the other puppy. They were both the same age, from the same shelter, and looked similar. She knew the litter was named after alcoholic beverages, so once the other owner said his dog's name at the shelter was Tequila, she knew instantly that it was Aspen's brother."

Goldwasser was subsequently put in touch with the owner of the other dog, now named Toby, so they could arrange to meet up. They thought it would be a fun experience for Aspen and Toby to be reunited all these months later.

Indeed, they met at a dog park in Boca, and it was instantly clear that the dogs could not have been happier.

"The dogs loved being with each other. They played together more than they played with the other dogs and kept coming back to each other. They had an instant connection and familiarity with each other," Goldwasser said.

Goldwasser documented the heartwarming experience and shared footage of the reunion on TikTok (@zackgoldwasser3). The video of Aspen seeing her biological brother for the first time since leaving the shelter has delighted the internet, generating over 378,200 views and 47,200 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. The online reaction has also led to more than 1,500 comments on the viral post so far.

The caption alongside the clip adds that it was "such a treat to make happen." In fact, the reunion went so well, the owners have even met up again since and plan to continue doing so. They hope that Aspen and Toby will continue being in each other's lives for many years to come.

By sharing Aspen's adoption story and this heartfelt moment, Goldwasser hopes he can encourage more people to consider adopting a rescue animal in need of a second chance.

He told Newsweek: "I would never judge a person for buying a purebred, but we need more people to consider adoption when possible. There are so many shelter animals that deserve amazing homes. We should all consider adoption before purchasing a puppy from a breeder."
