Jaw-Dropping 75-Pound Corgi Is Basically a Giant Lapdog

Corgis are generally supposed to be on the smaller side. They're little potatoes, it's kind of the whole schtick when it comes to this breed! They're not necessarily the smallest dog ever, but they're not supposed to be huge, right?

Wrong, apparently. One dog dad recently showed off his Corgi-Malamute cross, though there's almost no Malamute to be seen with this boy. He just looks like a massive, 75-pound mega-Corgi:

Apollo the Corgi-Mute looks to me like he's 99% Corgi, 1% Malamute... But that 1% is definitely carrying him to the tippy-top of every growth chart. Somebody in the comments called him a "Corgi Pro Max!"

Apollo is well-loved, and he's in excellent health. The only reason he's 75 pounds is that he's a Malamute cross: he's not overweight by any means. Mixes like the Corgi-Mute can go one of two ways: leaning more Corgi/smaller, or leaning into their Malamute genes and being massive.

Apollo clearly went the second way, though his coat is 100% Corgi. He's maybe a little bit fluffier than a traditional Corgi, and a Corgi is most likely not going to do this:

Someone in the comments of this video called Apollo a "king-sized Corgi," and I couldn't have said it better myself. He's so cute it honestly freaks me out a little!

Standard Corgis Are Much Smaller

If Apollo were a standard Corgi who was 75 pounds, everybody would be concerned for him, and upon seeing him for the first time, a lot of people are concerned. Luckily, there's a perfect good explanation for his size.

Standard Pembroke Welsh Corgis should weigh about 30 pounds at the largest, while Cardigan Welsh Corgis are slightly bigger, often reaching about 40 pounds at their largest size. Being overweight is particularly rough on Corgis because:

  • Their small legs might not be able to handle the strain.
  • The extra weight puts more pressure on their backs.
  • It makes it tough for them to breathe.

Overweight or "chonky" dogs are often made viral by social media, but it can be legitimately dangerous for the dog. Luckily, Apollo isn't overweight at all: he's just giant!
