Southwest Airlines Announces Major Expansion

Southwest Airlines has announced a major expansion by adding non-stop flights to a new state.

"There's a new dot on Southwest's map-and it comes with glaciers, wildlife, and mountain views," Southwest wrote in a May 2026 press release, announcing that the airline has launched service to Alaska for the first time.

Southwest shared photos from Southwest Airlines Flight 3094, which landed in Anchorage for the first time on May 15.

Southwest Airlines Will Offer Nonstop Flights to Anchorage, Alaska, From 2 Major Cities

The Alaska flights will be non-stop and will take off from two major cities in the continental U.S.

On May 15, 2026, the airline "launched service to Alaska with twice daily nonstop flights to Anchorage from Denver and Las Vegas. Southwest flies more Customers nonstop within the United States than any other airline, and Alaska is the 43rd state in the carrier's domestic network," Southwest wrote in a news release.

"Southwest continues to give Customers more opportunities to connect with the travel experiences that matter most to them," said Ted Gordon, Vice President Airport Affairs at Southwest Airlines, in the release. "Anchorage stands out as a great destination for its culture, unforgettable scenery, and hospitality."

Southwest Announced the New Destination With a Mascot Called 'Seymour the Moose'

Southwest rolled out the celebrations when the new routes launched.

The airline "celebrated customers traveling on the inaugural flights to Anchorage with commemorative boarding passes, Alaskan-themed swag, and a friendly welcome at the gate from Anchorage's very own critters-including Seymour the Moose," wrote Southwest.

"Customers traveling to The Last Frontier-and beyond-can unlock more value with Southwest's Rapid Rewards benefits. Members can earn points by flying or use rewards to book travel to Anchorage and Southwest's other new destinations," the release stated. "Plus, Members can enjoy free WiFi, thanks to T-Mobile, along with tier benefits, while enjoying Southwest's industry-leading reliability and hospitality."

Other photos posted by Southwest showed passengers on a flight from Denver to Anchorage holding commemorative tickets.

In Another Recent Move, Southwest Banned Humanoid Robots From Its Flights

The Anchorage addition has come as the airline continues to announce changes, in the wake of its controversial decisions to require assigned seating and eliminating free checked bags for all customers.

In another recent change, Southwest banned humanoid robots from all of its flights. "Southwest Airlines does not allow human-like or animal-like robots to be transported in the cabin or as checked baggage, regardless of size or purpose," the airline's new policy said, according to News Nation.

"All other robots, including toys, must be able to fit within a carry-on size bag and comply with existing battery restrictions," adds the policy.

That policy change came after a humanoid robot named "Stewie" boarded a Southwest plane and even sat in its own seat, News Nation reported. A man from Dallas "bought the robot its own seat, using a type of ticket often purchased for fragile items such as wedding dresses or equipment," CBS Dallas reported. "Stewie was fitted with a smaller battery that could pass through security. The robot then walked through the airport and boarded the flight to Dallas Love Field."
