Animal Shelter Lets Rescue Dogs ‘Choose Their Person'-and It Feels Like Fate

Something important to know about shelter dogs is that, even if you fall in love with one, you absolutely must consider what the dog wants, too. Just because you vibe with a dog doesn't mean they vibe with you, and making sure it's a perfect fit is the most important thing.

It takes a lot of trial and error, most of the time. However, one shelter recently tried taking all of the guesswork out of it: they just let the dogs go into one big room and hand-pick (paw-pick?) their person. It worked out even better than they anticipated:

The Animal Care Centers of NYC are such a loving, kind place for animals during their toughest transition periods. All of their dogs get placed in foster homes around New York City, keeping them out of that overcrowded and super stressful traditional shelter environment.

On this day, though, they brought a bunch of dogs into a room with prospective adopters and let them loose. Each dog got to choose their person, and for most of them, you could see them make their choice immediately. This little experiment is called Love at First Wag!

These dogs didn't necessarily get adopted by the people they chose right off the bat; they did, however, get to go on a "first date" field trip with them. Everyone who participated is an approved adopter with the NYCACC, so I would bet several families were completed! The first time they did it was equally precious:

Sign up at nycacc.org/LoveAtFirstWag and join us for Love at First Wag: Boroughbreak Edition on Sunday, May 17th at 11AM at Queens ACC! Meet shelter dogs in a fun new way and let them choose YOU for a BoroughBreak adventure. Up to 10 attendees at a time will sit in our interaction room while medium to large adult dogs come in one by one to pick their BoroughBreak buddy for the day. BoroughBreaks are day outings that give dogs a break from the kennel life. These outings help us learn more about how they behave outside the shelter environment. Spend the day exploring NYC, relaxing at a park, or just enjoying some one on one time together. Interested in adopting, fostering, or volunteering? Staff and counselors will be available to answer questions and help you meet more dogs. You do not need to be interested in adopting to attend, just excited to spend time with some dogs! Please note: • Event is first come, first served • Participation is limited to 30 parties • There may be a wait depending on attendance • RSVP before May 17th to receive an email reminder You might just meet your perfect match this spring. #nycacc#boroughbred#LoveAtFirstWag

How to Know When a Shelter Dog Has 'Chosen' You

Clearly, the shelter dogs in this video chose their people, and they did it quickly. However, love at first sight is only a small part of this process: when a shelter dog has really, truly chosen you, you're going to know.

Pretty much immediately, if a shelter dog is interested in you, you'll see them perk up. They might even come closer to you or try to get your attention! Don't take that as final, though. Look for these other signs:

  • Tail wagging.
  • Calmness.
  • Nuzzling.
  • Obsession.

When a dog won't stop looking at you, bumping into your legs, or climbing into your lap, it's a sure sign they like you a lot. And if they fall asleep on you during a visit? That's your dog! I hope Love at First wag will continue bringing families together!
