Parrot Has a Full-on Conversation With Mom and It's Incredible

Not all Parrots are conversationalists, but those who are tend to be quite chatty with whoever happens to be around. Gideon, a 6-year-old Eclectus Parrot, is a friendly guy who finds it easy to strike up a conversation, especially with his mom, at any moment.

In a recent TikTok video, the bird is perched on the back of a kitchen stool when he just casually says, "Hi! What are you doing?" From off camera, his mom replies, "I'm cleaning the dishes, as per usual." Mom then sings a little melody, prompting the Parrot to chime in. Honestly, as someone with limited knowledge of the subject, I find Gideon's conversational skills quite fascinating.

This adorable singing banter goes back and forth for a few moments, and Gideon adds a little spice to the moment by saying... well, more like singing his favorite word, "wings," a few times, too. He's very smart, and it's clear these two have been together for a long time. It's almost like they can finish each other's sentences.

Amazingly, the Eclectus Parrot doesn't just speak when spoken to. He actually starts the conversation and knows the words to their little song. The way he harmonizes with his mom is enough to melt your heart, and it's nearly impossible to watch this clip just once.

Can All Parrots Talk?

According to the Parrot Society, while all birds are intelligent and social, not all can talk. They note that, "Unlike humans, who rely on vocal cords, Parrots produce sounds using a structure called the syrinx. Located at the point where the trachea splits into the lungs, the syrinx vibrates as air passes through it, creating sound."

The Parrot Society also lists the top five species of Parrots that are especially known for their vocal abilities. They include:

  • Amazon Parrots - Known for their clear speech and extensive vocabulary.
  • African Grey Parrots - Famous for understanding concepts and context.
  • Indian Ringneck Parakeets - Can learn up to 250 words.
  • Quaker (Monk) Parakeets - Small in size but loud and talkative.
  • Eclectus Parrots - Fast learners with a unique range of vocalizations.

I will say, it's important to watch Gideon's video to the end; otherwise, you'll miss his best trick! He's too cute!
