This Cat's Hilarious Obsession Has People Comparing Her to a Golden Retriever

Most pet parents expect this type of behavior from a dog. For example, a golden retriever doing what he does best, retrieving household items like shoes. You expect to see him trotting into the living room carrying a discarded slipper.

But from a cat? Now that is a whole new level. After her mom posted on Reddit's r/cats, one cat has the Internet laughing. She has developed a very dog-like obsession with shoes.

She is not attacking them or retrieving them. She is not scratching them. This just loves them with an oddly emotional intensity. Her mom jokes that they are her comfort object.

The Cat Treats Shoes Like Treasured Objects

According to the owner, the cat constantly puts her head inside shoes or carries them around. She has developed a deep attachment to them that feels confusing at first. But as always, Reddit has many people with similar stories. Many pet parents recognized the behavior and shared their experiences.

One commenter wrote, "Mine's not obsessed with my shoes. But he does like to sniff them on occasion and he's put toys in my shoes before."

Another admitted their cat gets "all up" in their shoes so aggressively that they now hide them.

And honestly, there's a pretty sweet explanation behind it.

Your Shoes Smell Like You

We rarely realize or admit it, but scent-heavy shoes and socks can be quite comforting for our pets. They carry the most scent of any other object we have on ourselves. And unlike cats and dogs, our sense of smell is relatively weak. Our pets, however, gather enormous amounts of emotional information through scent.

Shoes often carry the strongest concentration of a person's smell because they absorb sweat throughout the day and stay close to the ground, where outdoor scents collect.

To pets, that combination can become incredibly comforting.

One Reddit user explained it perfectly: "Shoes and socks often smell so strongly of their human that pets can kind of become obsessed."

Another added, "Mine just rubs his whole body on my socks I wore that day like it's literal catnip."

The Internet Loves Pets That Act Slightly Wrong

Managing a pet with a footwear fixation sounds strange until you have one. It can be a challenge to prevent your pet from destroying your footwear.

But on the flip side, your pet will probably be an internet sensation. A cat behaving like a retriever hits a very specific kind of internet sweet spot. It's recognizable enough to feel relatable but unusual enough to make people stop scrolling.

And honestly, the cat looked completely sincere about the whole thing.
