Without This Essential Nutrient, Your Collagen Supplement is Useless

Collagen is a polarizing supplement in the fitness world. Due to the lack of leucine in its amino acid profile, collagen is not really beneficial for muscle growth or recovery (unless paired with a complete protein).

It's theorized to help with skin and connective tissue health, but the research has been mixed at best. But part of the reason is that there is one additional nutrient necessary for collagen synthesis.

Your body is constantly creating collagen. Collagen is a structural protein, but it doesn't just magically appear in its fully formed state. Vitamin C is the key cofactor in this building process. It's necessary in order for this new collagen to take its robust, stable structure. Otherwise, it is so weak that it actually degrades from your natural body temperature.

The extreme example of this is scurvy. Scurvy is caused by a vitamin C deficiency and leads to impaired wound healing, joint deterioration, bleeding gums, and fatigue. This was common many years ago in sailors who did not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, both good sources of vitamin C.

While that is the worst case scenario, the principle remains true. Without vitamin C, your collagen supplementation is basically useless. The problem with many studies on collagen supplementation is that they do not account for vitamin C status.

You don't need a megadose; somewhere between 80 and 200mg taken at the same time as your collagen is enough to support the synthesis process. Whole food sources like citrus fruits, bell peppers, and kiwi are great options if you don't want to take a supplement. And if you do want to supplement, the good news is that vitamin C is one of the more inexpensive supplements out there.

So if you've tried collagen before with minimal results and are thinking of giving it another try, remember that this is a team effort. Collagen and vitamin C are a tandem; you can't have one without the other.
