Golden Retriever Thinks He's Helping With Dinner and Won't Back Off
There are so many things to love about Golden Retrievers, and one of the best things about them is that they're always right there, ready to jump in and help in any way they can. Sometimes their help makes sense, and other times, well, maybe it doesn't, but it's so cute to see them try.
In this video, we meet a very sweet Golden Retriever who thinks he's helping his mom with her meal, but it's probably not what he thinks. Take a look!

TikToker Megan & Benny (@meganbartels1) shared a video of a very darling Golden Retriever, Benny, who was so focused on doing one thing that he couldn't possibly get any closer to the action.
He's either very concerned that someone is going to take his mama's food off her plate and is guarding it, or he's very zoned in, hoping she will offer him the last few bites from her plate. Either way, Benny has made it his whole goal to guard those last two tater tots, and he's doing such a hilariously good job at it. He thinks he's helping, but is he?

In the comments, hundreds of people had thoughts to share about cute Benny and how much he was guarding those last few tater tots. Some comments included, "He's just keeping 'em warm with his nostril air," "I guess ALL dogs do this, cuz my dang pupper will STALK me if she so much as THINKS I might be thinking about food," "Honestly though, 10/10 for self-control," "My Golden Retriever's name is Tater Tot and he does in fact love tater tots," "Definitely unclear... does he like potatoes or not?" and "He's absorbing the soul of the tater tot already."

Why Dogs Beg for Food and What Trainers Say About Managing the Behavior
Benny is such a sweetheart that it would be nearly impossible to be upset or frustrated with him, even though he seems to have some struggles with personal space. If your dog does something similar and begs for food while you're trying to eat it, and that's bothering you, there are some things you can do to help stop that behavior.
According to PetMD, experts say dogs learn this begging behavior because it's their "primary reinforcer," and they're driven to find food so they can sniff it out anywhere. Those two things are just part of a dog's behavior, but they also can't really tell whether something they're smelling is for them or all yours. But this can become an issue if they learn that the food is theirs, too, and if they beg and stand near it, they'll get what they want.
If that's a behavior you want stopped, there are a few things you can do, according to PetMD. This includes teaching a pup an alternative learned behavior when it's time for you to sit down to eat. This could be practicing with them to sit on their dog bed when it's time for you to eat. Give them a treat when they stay there instead of their nose being on your dish, and over time, that will become the new learned thing.
An alternative would be to keep them occupied with a treat-rewarding toy, so their focus goes there instead of trying to snap a bit of food off your plate.
If it's not bothering you or posing any issues for your pup, maybe Benny is doing this all right.
