Every dog parent knows that when your dog gives you a certain look, it usually means they've been up to no good. Leanne discovered a torn-up shoe with her dogs, Golden Retriever Chester and Morkie Skye, standing nowhere near the scene of the crime, but looking like they knew they'd just been completely busted.

Leanne doesn't accuse either dog outright, though. She simply asks which one tore up the shoe, but not surprisingly, neither of them ‘fesses up. Their expressions, however? Those tell a very different story.

People had a lot to say about Leanee's funny video and left more than 4,800 comments about it. @Ez$ was spot on when they said, "Nothing better than guilty dog videos lol!"

@Kennedie got 47,000 likes when she shared, "Dogs are so freaking funny, they understand us 1000%!"

Commenter @Sunshine shared a screenshot of the Morkie slowly trying to creep back up the stairs and said what she was probably thinking, "If I move very slowly, she won't see me..." @Lori Cassalini Klein agreed, and won nearly 30,000 likes when she added, "How the little one creeped away in slow motion was hilarious!!"

Do Dogs Feel Guilt?

If you have a dog at home, you know they definitely act like a guilty suspect when they get caught red-pawed doing something they're not supposed to be doing. But do dogs actually feel guilty?

Turns out, the look we all think means guilt might actually mean something completely different. According to Vet Street, it might look like our dogs are feeling guilt, but that's not actually what's happening.

"Your dog's guilty look may not indicate guilt at all; instead, it is most likely a reaction to a human's upset or angry response." They pointed to studies led by Alexandra Horowitz and Julie Hecht that found dogs are more likely to show that "guilty look" when confronted by an upset owner, whether they actually did something wrong or not.

The American Kennel Club shared some of the common behaviors dogs exhibit when we think they're feeling guilty, including:

  • Tucked tail
  • Visible whites of the eyes
  • Cowering or hunched posture
  • Yawning
  • Lip licking
  • Flattened ears
  • Avoiding eye contact

What dogs are actually showing are signs of stress or fear, not necessarily guilt.

One thing's for sure, though: the Golden and Morkie in this video have that guilty look absolutely mastered.
