This Legendary Sports Moment Still Gives Fans Chills Decades Later
It's been 46 years since perhaps the greatest individual performance in NBA Finals history. Magic Johnson usually played point guard, but in a moment of crisis in which the Los Angeles Lakers were missing their best player that season, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Johnson moved up to the center position in his stead and played the game of his life.
42 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists later, Johnson led the Lakers to their first NBA title since 1972 and won NBA Finals MVP. Magic's ability to lead his team from such a young age and do a little bit of everything on the basketball court is what truly defines his career and separates him from his peers and those who came after him in basketball lore.
The Lakers were headed to Philadelphia with a 3-2 series lead over the Sixers. Abdul-Jabbar's absence was devastating at the time, as he won the NBA MVP in the regular season, his sixth of his career. This number remains a record. Kareem's dominance would normally be impossible to replicate, but Magic's skills and size made him the perfect antedote to the Lakers' problems.
Magic would go on to win three MVP awards in the regular season himself, as well as four more titles. He remains one of the top players in league history, but it was that moment on May 16, 1980, that will always be the pinnacle of his greatness. To not be overwhelmed by the responsibility given to him on short notice, and to go above and beyond what any star should be asked to do at only 20 years old, is special.
Years later, Johnson talked about the lead-up to this game and how his teammates didn't believe the Lakers had what it took without Kareem.
"I get to the airport, everybody's head is down because Kareem can't play. I said 'So what, Kareem can't play? We're still gonna win!'"
"I went and sat in Kareem's seat, and as every Laker came by, I said, 'Never fear! Magic is here!'"
Looks like Magic's motivational speeches were just as chilling as his play on the court.
