Orphaned Baby Hippo Forms Heartwarming Bond With Wildlife Keepers After His Mother Died Protecting Him
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of Africa's oldest and most respected wildlife conservation charities, dedicated to protecting animals such as the hippopotamus, elephant, and many others. While no two emotional animal rescue stories are ever the same, one orphaned baby hippopotamus from Naivasha, Kenya, is currently melting hearts across the Internet.
The tiny hippo was spotted nudging his mother's lifeless body on May 2 after she died protecting him. Just days old when rescuers stepped in, the baby hippo quickly formed a touching bond with his human caretakers. Bumpy, the rescued calf, may have had a heartbreaking start to life, but the instant connection between the baby hippo and wildlife keepers marked the beginning of a much brighter future.

The wildlife keepers who rescued Bumpy are quite literally his heroes, and he's repaying them handsomely with all the love he can muster. From spending nights side by side with Simon to cuddling in the helicopter with Joseph, this baby animal couldn't be more grateful for the care he's been getting.
Viewers like @orion_1713 can't get enough of the adorable hippo calf. They commented, "They are just like human children, so cute when young until they grow up." Luckily for Bumpy's caretakers, he'll be reintegrated with other hippos by the time he's old enough to pose a potential threat.
For now, the baby hippo and the wildlife keepers are making the moment of every moment together. Sheldrick Wildlife Trust shared on its website, "Bumpy is already hooked on his Keepers. He follows them around like a shadow, grunting noisily with every step. He is a very chatty fellow and keeps up a steady stream of conversation. Being such a young baby, he rests plenty and sleeps most soundly when cuddled alongside a Keeper."
He also has another hippopotamus roommate, a nearly 1-year-old calf named Musumbi. While they don't share a space yet, they met briefly and decided to revisit their friendship when they're a bit older. For now, Bumpy only wants his Keepers!

However, other baby animals can be rescued by anyone. Any kind soul can stop to investigate a kitten on its own or a baby bird that fell from the nest. One woman even rescued a baby fox who was lost on a residential street!
Whether it's a lonely puppy or a baby hippo in need of help, it's heartwarming to know there are selfless people ready to help. It's because of them that Bumpy's getting the second chance he's always deserved.
