Woodinville Trader Joe's to open Friday
Are you an expert at maneuvering a shopping cart down tight aisles? Or do you love telling strangers in Hawaiian shirts personal details about your life? If so, then you might want to visit the new Trader Joe's opening in Woodinville on Friday.
The store at 14035 N.E. Woodinville Duvall Road will be the city's first. The closest Trader Joe's for Woodinville residents has been in Kirkland's Totem Lake.
Woodinville Councilmember Mike Millman announced the news a year ago in a Facebook post that shared the top three online comments the city sees most: "Did anyone else hear that loud boom?" "I saw a bear in my neighborhood today!" and "I hope they put a Trader Joe's there!"
Millman confirmed that the grocery store would finally come and that the city "had been working on this for a long time!"
Grocery store openings might not be a big deal under other normal circumstances. But Trader Joe's has a cult following for its specialty, clean-label products.
The grocery chain is especially popular in the Pacific Northwest, with its high concentration of boho-chic and granola-loving people.
Just last year, hundreds lined up for the grand opening of a Trader Joe's in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood, around the same time as the mini-tote bag craze. If you don't remember that, it was a short period where a limited run of small, canvas Trader Joe's bags had a chokehold on TikTok users (despite their uselessness as an actual grocery bag). The bags sometimes sold out in less than an hour, leading some people to resell them online at marked-up prices.
The obsession occasionally makes a resurgence as Trader Joe's releases specialty mini-tote bags. A video from March shows people pushing each other at a New York Trader Joe's to grab special-edition pastel-colored bags.
Trader Joe's new summer-themed insulated bags featuring zipper tops will drop May 20. So if you're planning on going to the new Woodinville Trader Joe's that day, you might want to arrive early - or mentally prepare for chaos.
