Ted Turner Co-Created Captain Planet: His Surprising Contribution to Superhero History
With the unfortunate news breaking on May 6 that media mogul Ted Turner passed away at the age of 87, a lot of attention is naturally being placed on his illustrious legacy. For example, he became widely known for revolutionizing the television news space when he founded CNN, the first channel to provide 24-hour news coverage. Expanding his influence in TV, he also founded TNT, TBS, and Cartoon Network. But beyond developing CNN and creating other networks, did you know he was also one of the brilliant minds behind one of the most iconic superheroes?
Ted Turner and Barbara Pyle Created Captain Planet
That's right. Ted Turner was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the 90s hit animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers (better known as just Captain Planet). Millennials such as myself will recall that the superhero show focused on five teens from across the globe who had specially powered rings to help them stop the pollution and destruction of the planet.
When they couldn't fight off the villainous polluters and destroyers on their own, that's when they combined forces to call "Earth's greatest champion," Captain Planet. Talking about his part in the creation of the hero, Turner shared in an interview:
"We started the Cartoon Network, or were in the process of doing it, and I said, ‘You know, there ought to be a cartoon series that has some meat on the bones.' And I said, ‘We need a superhero for the Earth.' And I came up with a Superman-type, Superman, Batman-type character who was green. And really, we decided at that point, I got a woman named Barbara Pyle, who worked with me in the environmental area, and I got her involved. And she and a fellow named Nick Boxer really produced the show. They took it to the next steps. But I came up with the idea for Captain Planet."
You can see the brief clip of Turner's own words below. By the way, it appears Turner was inspired to create Captain Planet based on his years as an environmentalist.
Ted Turner's Legacy Extends Beyond TV
Turner also helped shape the professional sports fandom in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout his lifetime, he had an ownership stake in the NBA's Atlanta Hawks, the MLB's Atlanta Braves, and the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers.
Additionally, he was known to be quite the philanthropist. He pledged and donated $1 billion to the United Nations to help out with its various charitable causes. Also, his Turner Foundation remains committed to protecting and restoring "the natural systems -air, land, and water- on which all life depends." It's also worth noting that in the restaurant space, Turner was a co-founder of Ted's Montana Grill.
Rest in peace, Ted Turner, and we send sincere well wishes to those he leaves behind.
