Drivers Spot Woman Sitting Beside a Baby Moose on the Road-Then They Realize Why
Living in Northeastern Ontario, Amy's mom is no stranger to wildlife encounters. Even so, she gave everyone a pleasant surprise when she decided to sit on the side of the road next to a young moose who was all alone. As the woman protected the baby moose, her daughter watched on with pride, even sharing the Canadian wildlife encounter on her TikTok account, @amymackevicius.
The heartwarming wildlife moment unfolded on April 22, but the mom's selfless action toward the moose calf is something her daughter and her online fans will remember forever. But why did she sit down with the moose on the side of the road?
@amymackevicius POV: you get a call from your mom and she says "drop everything and drive down the road". Little did you know, she'd be sitting beside a baby moose to make sure no one hits it until the MNR comes. Such an incredible experience but seeing any animal not well makes my stomach turn. Praying the MNR gets there before it's too late #ontario#canada#wildlife#moose
Sound of Calm - Cloudy Skies
This is the most relaxed wildlife encounter ever! Amy's mom didn't see a mama moose, so she waited with the little one on the side of the road until officials arrived. This way, oncoming cars could see the adorable hazard in the road and give the animal plenty of room.
"Girlie is full on loving life," commented @thewildfelicity. "Shoes off, sitting on the ground, chilling with her moosie." There's no question this mama is living every animal lover's dream, and it seems like this special situation left an even bigger impact on her than anyone could have imagined.
Amy's mom wrote, "This was absolutely up there on my bucket list. The most beautiful few hours I have ever spent! A true gift." Not everyone is lucky enough to get up close and personal with a baby animal like this, but what happened to the moose calf?
The selfless woman sat with the baby moose for several hours with no sign of its mom or MNR-Canada's Ministry of Natural Resources. Eventually, the little one stood up and walked into the woods after water and apples, and everyone is hoping for the best.
What to Do If You Spot a Baby Moose Alone
As tempting as it may be to approach a baby animal who appears to be alone, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game advises against doing so. After all, protective moms are not to be messed with, especially when they're as large and heavy as a mama moose.
"If you come across a moose calf or bear cub and don't see its mother, be alert," the department advises. "You may have walked between the mother and her young. Back away and leave the way you came." Mothers can leave their calves alone for hours, or even days, while they search for food, though there are rare, heartbreaking cases when the mother has been hit by a car.

Calling local wildlife authorities is always the best move if you find a baby moose who appers to be alone. They can attempt to reunite the mom and calf, or they can find an appropriate home for little ones who are truly orphaned.
It doesn't take much to be a friend to wild animals, whether someone's watching over a baby moose or reuniting a mom and baby squirrel. A little kindness can go a long way!
