This Dog Is Still Afraid of a Fence That Isn't There Anymore

Many people, especially those in rural areas, use electric fences to keep animals in or out of certain spaces. You'd think that once the fence was removed, it wouldn't be an issue anymore, but this dog named Buster didn't get the memo. Even though the fence is gone, he still refuses to cross any spot where it used to be.

Buster's dad, @CutTimber_1, recently took down the fence but left the gate they used to pass through. Buster, who we're guessing had a run-in with it at some point, now patiently waits for his dad to open the gate before crossing, completely unaware that he could walk around it without any problem.

I tool the electric fence down Sunday. But Buster does not know it! Buster was crying to be let out of the zero fence pen!!! He would only exit out the gate. . #fyp#dog#happy#cry#funny

While @CutTimber_1 took the fence down a week ago, Buster still hasn't realized he can just walk through where it used to be. He's completely conditioned! Dad said in the caption, "I took the electric fence down Sunday, but Buster does not know it! Buster was crying to be let out of the zero fence pen; he would only exit out the gate!"

Why Dogs Remember Boundaries Even After They're Gone

@Wanderin Jeepsy got more than 30,000 likes when they shared, "Buster remembers that time he got shocked by the nearly invisible electric fence. Buster says fool me once!!"

They're right. Dogs learn boundaries through repetition and association, especially when those boundaries are reinforced over time, like with an electric fence or an e-collar. Once they realize there's a negative consequence at a particular spot, they'll remember it, and avoid the area. They don't just remember the fence; they remember how it made them feel.

Dogs are also creatures of habit; if they've always been taught not to cross a certain line, they'll often continue to respect that boundary, even when there's nothing physically stopping them.
