Golden Retriever in ‘Grandpa Jail' Has the Silliest Escape Plan

Golden Retrievers are often regarded as the best dogs ever, and they just might be. For the most part, these dogs are excellent listeners, highly trainable, and always eager to please. When they want to be, however, they can also be a passive pain in the tail (said with love, of course).

Just look at this Golden Retriever: they were out at a game, and he was being a total goblin the whole time. His mom decided that revenge was a dish best served in Grandpa Jail... Except it didn't exactly go as she'd planned it:

Romeo the Golden Retriever is constantly keeping everyone on their toes. It looks like he was really playing the long game with this one, too: that collar was slipping off for a while before he finally decided to take his shot and make a break for it!

He didn't get far, though: the wardens of the Grandpa Jail (AKA his grandpas) put it back on him immediately. In the end, this might have backfired: now, they know he's a flight risk. He'll be in a more secure collar before he ever gets the chance to try again!

Romeo is still a puppy, which is why he behaves the way he does. Golden Retrievers are awesome and wonderful dogs, but the puppy stage can be rough! They're very curious, always wanting to know exactly what's happening and why!

If they could have Romeo leashed up all the time, I bet they'd do it. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be very nice. Land sharks need room to explore!

How to Choose the Right Collar for a Golden Retriever

If you want to avoid some headaches with your dog, especially when they're a puppy, your collar and leash combo is a great place to start. Golden Retrievers are very smart, which often means they can learn how to escape!

The type of collar you choose will depend on your likes and dislikes as a dog parent, but also your dog's tendencies and preferences. There are typically three main categories:

  • Standard collars are great for fully trained, adult Golden Retrievers who don't pull.
  • Harnesses are better for Golden Retrievers who need a little more comfort and guidance, and for puppies.
  • Martingale collars are excellent for Golden Retrievers who are prone to pulling or slipping out of their collars, as well as puppies who are in training.

In Romeo's case, he could probably benefit from a Martingale or a harness. Or, alternatively, maybe more Grandpa Jail time! Life sentence!
