How Tom Holland's Life Has Changed Since Getting Sober

Tom Holland is on a personal and professional high right now, one he's not so sure he'd be on if he hadn't gotten sober.

The 29-year-old Spider-Man star had been alcohol-free since a Dry January in 2022 led to a permanent decision to step away from what he now calls a sometimes "incredibly dangerous thing."

The actor is so committed to his sober lifestyle that he even has his own non-alcoholic beer brand, BERO. While promoting the line at a padel tournament in Los Angeles this week, Holland revealed how putting down the bottle has changed him for the better.

Tom Holland's Sober Outlook

"Drinking was something that was ultimately really getting in the way of my professional life," Holland, most known for playing web-slinger Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, told USA Today.

"Being an actor and living your life on the big stage can be really stressful. And I think that alcohol, for me personally, really compounded that issue," he continued. "And, since getting rid of the booze and feeling more like myself and waking up clear-headed every day and fresh to start the day, I just feel so much more confident in myself as who I am as a person."

When asked whether he believes his life would be where it is today-with a new Spider-Man movie, a Christoper Nolan epic, The Odyssey, and a recent wedding to Zendaya all in the mix-had he not quit when he did, Holland was unsure.

"That's a really big question," Holland answered. "I've been so lucky in the last four years that my career has really blossomed in a really lovely way, and I really love what's happening and what I have to come in the future. And I don't know how much of that would've come to fruition had I still been drinking."

Inside His Lifestyle Change

Holland made it seem like many of those in his inner circle have followed him down a similar path while speaking with the outlet, saying his friends have also strayed further from those alcohol-fueled nights of their youth.

"All of my friends have really slowed down drinking," he shared, recalling a recent hang with around 10 of his friends where they didn't drink.

"That used to be, like, a really, really boozy affair. We'd be up till 1 in the morning drinking. We'd be all hungover the next day," continued Holland, saying that wasn't the case this time.

"Everyone was really present. There was no waking up the next day feeling groggy. And I just love what it's done for my life in general," he added.

While Holland told USA Today that he thinks "alcohol can be an amazing thing," he added that it can "also be an incredibly dangerous thing." And as more and more young people take on a more sober lifestyle, he said he believes "it creates...a safer environment, a more communal environment."

What's Next for Tom Holland?

While he's currently promoting his non-alcoholic beer, Holland will soon be swinging into high gear promoting two major tentpoles. And they both drop the same month!

Up first, on July 17, is Nolan's The Odyssey, which sees the actor playing Telemachus, the son of Matt Damon's Odysseus.

"I think fans are going to be really, really blown away by the set pieces and sequences throughout the movie, because even as someone that was there on the day and was in the film, I was absolutely blown away by the scale, the scope, his ability to navigate such an intricate and heartfelt story in the middle of this insane kind of action movie," Holland recently told GQ.

"So it's one of my proudest achievements as an actor, and I'm so touched that Chris gave me the opportunity to be in the film," he added.

After that comes Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which picks up four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

That movie, of course, ended with Holland's Peter Parker being erased from the memories of everyone who ever knew him. So while the Avengers, MJ, and Ned may all know who Spider-Man the superhero is, they don't know Parker at all.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie hits theaters July 31, 2026.
