1,500 Beagles Bred for Labs Are Getting a Second Chance-How Rescuers and Activists Changed Their Fate
It's not every day that hundreds of dogs get a chance to leave the only life they've ever known-but that's exactly what's happening right now in the biggest animal rescue news of 2026. More than 1,500 Beagles released from breeding facility Ridglan Farms are finally getting the opportunity to experience something completely new: life outside the system that bred them and sent them to laboratories.
For years, these dogs were bred for a purpose they never chose. Now, thanks to the efforts of Beagle Freedom Project and its partners, hundreds are being moved into safety, where they'll receive medical care, patience, and real affection. It's also the result of nearly a decade of advocacy, turning this moment into something bigger than a single rescue and a powerful step in the ongoing push to end animal testing for good.

This news brings immense relief to animal welfare advocates who have supported this cause for over nine years. Ridglan Farms has been breeding Beagle dogs for sale to laboratories in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, since 1966. However, the protests and negotiations surrounding their operations have become some of the largest and most visible animal welfare efforts in recent years, shaping the future of Ridglan Farms, animal rights, and potentially animal testing as a whole.
How Activists Rescued 1500 Beagles
The Wisconsin Beagle rescue may have been finalized on April 30, but animal rights activists have been making headlines from the breeding facility for weeks. On March 15, dozens of protestors stormed one of Ridglan Farm's buildings and rescued 30 Beagles, eight of whom were confiscated by police and returned to the facility. This dramatic event captured nationwide attention and rallied the spirits of local activists, who began organizing a larger, more formal rescue effort.

Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs was formed with a single goal in mind: to remove every dog from the Ridglan Farms property. Hundreds of volunteers and weeks of training led up to April 18, when a massive standoff between protestors and law enforcement unfolded. On this day, no animals were rescued, activists did not come close to entering the building, and several protestors were hospitalized after tear gas, rubber bullets, and physical force were used to keep them away from the facility.
Finally, everything changed on April 30, when Ridglan Farms announced the sale of most of its dogs after a series of negotiations. Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy funded the purchase, though it's unclear how many dogs remain at Ridglan.
What's Next For the Ridglan Farm Beagles?
The Beagle Freedom Project is overseeing the transportation and placement of 500 of the rescue dogs. 300 dogs will be sent to Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Florida, and another 500 will stay local at the Dane County Humane Society. Over 50 partner rescues are also assisting in giving the Beagles the best re-start to life.
Wisconsin locals will have the best chance to adopt rescued beagles once they receive the medical care and socialization they need to thrive. That being said, some placements will happen faster than others, as no two rescue dogs have the same timeline or needs.

Shannon Keith, President & Founder of Beagle Freedom Project, said, "BFP and our partners are placing a majority of the dogs in Wisconsin, where the community members have quite literally demonstrated their commitment to social justice, humanitarian efforts, and respect for life and liberty. Locals have been dedicated to physically and audibly advocating for the Ridglan Farms dogs for the past 9 years.
The Ridglan Farms Rescue Is Just One Step in a Much Bigger Fight
What happened at Ridglan Farms is undeniably a win, but it's not the whole story. Facilities like this still exist, and beagles continue to be bred for testing because the system that supports it hasn't fully gone away.
That's what makes this dog rescue, led by Beagle Freedom Project and its partners, so important. It proves that change is possible when advocacy, awareness, and action come together-but it also highlights how much work is left to do. For these dogs, everything has changed. For countless others, the outcome is still uncertain, which is exactly why moments like this matter far beyond a single rescue.
