'Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced' Will Remove Fan-Favorite Features

In what might have been one of the worst-kept video game secrets of 2026 (which Ubisoft even admitted in its announcement video), Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced has been officially revealed, and a lot of new information is coming out about the title. Unfortunately, despite being a remake, there will be some missing content from the original game, at least at launch.

Reported by IGN, which was in attendance for a press event for the game, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced will not include the multiplayer component of the original game or the DLC expansion content. Additionally, it appears some of the modern-day gameplay segments have at least been streamlined, with the game more focused on pirate Edward Kenway's quest.

"With Resynced, we made a clear choice," Resynced creative director Paul Fu said. "It is a pure, story-driven adventure, and we are fully focused on Edward's adventures in the Caribbean. As a result of this focus, we have elected to not have the multiplayer, or the DLC. Resynced is a 2026 take on the original legend, and for those of us who are curious, the original will still be available."

Previous Assassin's Creed titles featured a unique cat-and-mouse-style of multiplayer assassination. That was largely abandoned when Assassin's Creed rebranded itself as more of an RPG than an action-adventure game, beginning with the release of Assassin's Creed Origins.

What might be even more surprising is the decision to leave out the modern-day gameplay segments, during which players could explore Abstergo Entertainment. The older Assassin's Creed titles ran two storylines simultaneously: one in the past and one in the present. It seems like, for this remake anyway, the modern storyline and implications will at least be put on pause.

"Back then in 2013, the present day reflected where the franchise was at," said Assassin's Creed franchise veteran Jean Guesdon, creative director of the original Black Flag and now Head of Content for the overall series. "It was a transition moment, especially with Desmond's story and what it meant at the time. But now with Resynced, I think there were some changes needed."

Fu echoed this statement, saying, ""For Resynced, we have approached it in a way that focuses on Edward's journey, while still connecting his memories to the Animus. The modern-day rifts in Resynced will feature new moments that focus on Edward's internal struggles."

Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynched will be released on July 9, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
