Shelter Dog Has Hours Left To Live Before Euthanasia, but There's a Twist

A dog who was just hours away from being euthanized has captured widespread attention on Instagram Threads after his new owner shared the moment he brought him home.

The post, shared by user @henrysmith885432, shows a white dog named Jaxson sitting in a stroller with a smile. Since being posted on April 20, the clip has earned 14,700 views.

Smith wrote that he had "adopted a dog today who was on the list to be euthanized by end of day," adding that he drove two and a half hours to reach the shelter in time. In a follow‑up comment, he said Jaxson "is already spoiled."

Euthanasia Rates Have Dropped Dramatically

New national data shows significant progress in reducing shelter euthanasia. According to Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS), the number of pets killed for space in U.S. shelters has dropped by nearly 60 percent over the last eight years.

• In 2016, more than 1 million dogs and cats were euthanized.
• In 2024, that number fell to 425,000-a 59 percent reduction.

Last year, just under 5 million dogs and cats entered U.S. shelters, and nearly 4 million were either still in care or had moved on to foster or forever homes.

BFAS compiles data from more than 10,000 shelters and rescue groups, displayed on its public "pet lifesaving dashboard." The organization's goal is for the U.S. to become a no‑kill nation, defined as a 90 percent save rate-a threshold that allows for the small percentage of animals whose medical or behavioral conditions severely affect their quality of life.

Julie Castle, BFAS CEO, previously told Newsweek: “We are now at a time where the 90 percent or above benchmark for shelters to be no-kill is not only widely accepted but has also become the new normal. Nearly two out of three shelters are achieving this lifesaving goal.”
