Couple Meet Street Dog on Day Two of Vacation-Then Everything Changes

A couple's chance meeting with a stray dog on the second day of their holiday in Greece has captured hearts online, after their emotional, months‑long effort to bring him home was shared on TikTok.

Octavia, 24, told Newsweek she and her partner Darren, 41, met the dog-now named Paco-while vacationing in Halkidiki, Greece.

She recently posted a montage of clips showing the moment they spotted him wandering along a road near the beach. Text in the video explains that “he would spend his day by the beach, hunting for food and avoiding cars.”

The footage then shows the pair crouching beside him, offering affection. “All he wanted was head scratches and love,” the text reads. By their final day of the trip, they had made a decision: they would adopt him.

Octavia, who now runs a dedicated account for Paco (@paco.onthewirral), explained that they arranged a pet taxi to transport the 5‑year‑old dog to a local rescue before they returned to England. But the plan quickly unraveled.

“Unfortunately, a day later, the rescue managed to accidentally allow him to escape after having his microchip, and he went missing for four months,” Octavia said.

The couple searched tirelessly, but eventually had to accept that Paco might not be found. Then came an unexpected call. “When we gave up looking, someone from Amigdaleonas-an 8.5-hour walk away from where he went missing-rang us to say he has been found.”

What followed was another lengthy wait. It took four additional months to secure the necessary documents and arrange transport for Paco to travel more than 3,000 miles to the United Kingdom.

“It has cost more than I've cared to count!” Octavia said, estimating they spent around $2,700 (£2,000) before even beginning his training.

The dog who arrived in England was timid and withdrawn. “He was very shut down when he came, but he's now full of life, friendly and had his first zoomies on the beach the other night,” Octavia said. “Everyone he meets loves him and mentions how kind he is.”

Viewers of the viral video have flooded the comments with support and shared experiences.

“As someone who is half Greek and who has lived in Greece, seen firsthand the struggles that stray cats and dogs go through. Thank you,” one user wrote.

Another added: “So glad you guys are giving this little baby a home.”

A third commented: “What a beautiful ending to a holiday and the most perfect beginning to a forever story!”
