Bernese Mountain Dog Tries Bobbing for Apples and Chaos Ensues

Some enrichment ideas look adorable in theory. Then you actually try them with your dog, and suddenly you are standing over a bowl of water questioning every decision that brought you there.

That is exactly the energy of this very funny video featuring a Bernese Mountain Dog attempting to bob for apples. The caption says, "Watch what happens when I try to get my Bernese Mountain Dog to bob for apples," and the post caption follows it up with, "Enrichment gone wrong " Which, honestly, could not be more accurate.

Mambo No. 5 - Pérez Prado

From the start, this dog had his own ideas.

Instead of focusing on the apples floating in the bowl, he became deeply interested in the microphone Mom had set nearby. Not the fruit. Not the game. The microphone. Which already tells you this is not going to be a clean, successful little fall activity moment. This is going to be a full production.

Then he tries pawing at the apples, which Mom quickly shuts down with a "no," because apparently, he decided the best approach is not bobbing but light manual labor. And frankly, you can see his point. If the apples are right there, why not just whack the system until it works?

One comment absolutely nailed the logic: "He's doing that because that's how u get the water out of the bowl to then have the yummy apples in peace, Mom, LOL." Honestly, that feels less like a joke and more like an actual explanation. He may not have been failing. He may have just been working on a much smarter, much messier strategy.

And then comes the roommate, who tries to demonstrate how it is supposed to be done. This somehow makes everything even funnier, because the Bernese Mountain Dog looks at the roommate like they have fully lost their mind. It is such a perfect dog reaction. You want me to do what with my face? In this water? For these apples? Absolutely not.

It is not just a dog failing an enrichment activity. It is a dog rejecting the premise with confidence.

Enrichment Still Counts, Even When It Gets Weird

This apple experiment may have gone off the rails, but it is still a great reminder that enrichment doesn't have to look perfect to be useful. Letting dogs sniff, problem-solve, paw, investigate, and interact with something new can engage their brains, even if the activity ends up looking nothing like the plan. VCA Hospitalsrecommends enrichment that encourages exploration, play, and thinking.

Honestly, this Berner looked at that bowl like he had been handed a group project he never agreed to.
