Mr. Movie: ‘Angry Birds’ game might be fun, but the movie isn’t

Red — the angriest of the birds living on an itty-bitty island — upsets everyone and anyone he encounters. Much of Red’s anger is justified, but some of it is kind of petty. No, make that really petty. It’s that attitude that gets Red sentenced to anger management classes with the local new-age philosophy guru.

The woo-woo philosophy is an irritation of a different kind.

Then a ship full of green pigs discover the island. First there are two, then four, then more, and pretty soon, they’ve overrun the place. Cynical Red is the only one that has figured out what the pigs are doing, but no one listens to the hot-tempered Red until it’s too late.

Angry Birds is done by first time directors Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, who did art and animation work on gems like Hotel Transylvania and Frozen. Doing artwork and animation and making a movie are light years apart. And not helping is the movie being written by Jon Vitti, who penned two of the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies.

I’ve never played the Angry Birds games. A lot of people I know say it’s really fun. I’ll take them at their word. And they should take me at my word when it comes to the movie based on the original pig invasion game.

It’s not fun. It’s not funny. Heck, it’s not even good anger management therapy. Rank this one as for the birds.
