Mr. Movie: Nothing neighborly or funny about ‘Neighbors 2’

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising picks up a short time after the first movie, Neighbors. Seth Rogan’s Mac Radner and his wife Kelly are selling their home, and it’s in a 30-day escrow. If the buyers like what they see after 30 days, they will buy it. Mac and Kelly — clearly not understanding real estate at all — have bought a new home. But with no escrow and if things don’t work out, they’ll own two homes and can only afford one.

And then the sorority girls move in next door. They’re miffed that sorority laws nationwide say women can’t party. Only fraternities can. Bucking the norm, it ends up being the same scene as with the guys. Parties, loud music, drinking, drugs and all.

Mac and Kelly beg the girls to wait 30 days before partying, but they need to get membership up to afford the rent, so the moratorium is a no-go, and it’s war. In the middle of it is Mac and Kelly’s nemesis from the first movie, Zac Efron’s Teddy Sanders.

Other than one scene where the characters work on spelling sorority, this is an unfunny disaster. Director and co-writer Nicholas Stoller, Rogen and the group that wrote the first film are responsible. Sequels are rarely good. When it’s a sequel of an original that sucks, that’s even worse. This one is packed with unfunny sex and drug jokes, and potty-mouthed humor.

Did I say humor? Poor choice of words.
