Mr. Movie: More sitcom than movie, ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ still a fun revisit

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is a better late than never sequel. I remember hearing a lady leaving the first film saying she wanted her own big, fat Greek wedding. She — as the box office showed — wasn’t alone.

That won’t be the case with this one.

Toula — still working at Mom and Dad’s restaurant — and husband Ian’s daughter Paris is just about ready to graduate from high school. Mom and Dad want her to go to college in Chicago. Her eyes are elsewhere.

A second plot has Gus and Maria finding out they aren’t really married. He refuses to propose to her in a romantic fashion, so she — in turn — refuses to marry him and make their union legal.

The original cast reunites and — as with the first film — Nia Vardalos writes. She plays no favorites with her characters. Everyone gets a zinger or two. Andrea Martin’s Aunt Voula gets a few more, but you get the sense that Vardalos loves the person who inspired the character more than the others.

While a bit more uneven than the original, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is as much fun. My only knock is that it’s packed with more plot threads than a TV sitcom. In fact, some of the sequences have more in common with TV than movies.
