Mr. Movie: Blanchett, Rooney give incredible performances in ‘Carol’

Cate Blanchett’s plays Carol, a lesbian. She connects with and is attracted Theresa, played by Mara Rooney. She finds the older woman’s magnetic personality and self-assurance irresistible. It is intimated that the virgin Theresa has realized it is not men she likes but women.

Carol is directed by Todd Haynes, the script is written by first timer Phyllis Nagy and is based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel.

Raves about the acting in Carol are deserved. Blanchett is a great actress who could stand around doing nothing and gain acting nominations. However, it is Rooney’s deer caught in headlights performance that is worthy of awards.

Another plus. This is a beautifully done movie. As he did with 2002’s Far From Heaven, Haynes sticks you in a time machine — and via gorgeous and accurate sets, costumes and autos — transports you to 1952 New York City. Mom, apple pie, soda fountains and the American dream are alive and well. But like Far From Heaven, a film about mixed race relationship and gay husband theme, all is not well with those not marching lockstep with the morals of the 1952.

The subject is — unfortunately — where Haynes’ movie disintegrates. The story moves at a snail’s pace, and while you feel for the dilemma and societal disgrace these women faced, the speed of the movie almost puts you to sleep.
