Nice plot twists here and there anchor a slow-moving cross-country thriller on a train.

Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer are missionaries in China who decide to take the train to Moscow before heading back to the USA. He’s Mr. Squeaky Clean. She has a dark past. Their marriage is troubled. They befriend a young couple that may or may not be smuggling drugs.

Bad decisions lead to the temptation of adultery, then to violence, then to a murder that builds things to a boil.

A Russian detective played by Ben Kingsley completes the complex plot.

Transsiberian is dark and absorbing. Though it slows in spots, this is a terrific film with an acting level that more than makes up for the flaws.

Mr. Movie rating: 4 1/2 stars

Rated R for mature themes, violence, language. It opens Friday at the Carmike 12.

5 stars to 4 1/2 stars: Must see on the big screen

4 stars to 3 1/2 stars: Good film, see it if it's your type of movie.

3 stars to 2 1/2 stars: Wait until it comes out on video.

2 stars to 1 star: Don't bother.

0 stars: Speaks for itself

Animation and real-life action have worked well together since the dawn of the art form in the late 1800s.
