Cable bridge will shut down for 1000s of holiday runners. Here’s when
Thousands of runners will brave the cold for one of the Tri-Cities’ most popular holiday traditions this weekend.
The Lampson Cable Bridge Run is 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 20. It’s been 47 years since the Tri-Cities holiday tradition kicked off.
It’s set to be one of the warmest, and most attended, runs in recent years. Registration was already close to 2,300 runners and walkers on Wednesday night.
In the past participants braved treacherous snow and ice, but the weather is looking clear, though chilly and breezy. Temperatures will be in the low 40s, getting up to a high of 51 by noon, say forecasters.
Runners and walkers cross over the Columbia River on the cable bridge, making their way from Kennewick to the Lampson crane yard in east Pasco. There are options to participate in a 10K, 5K and a one-mile “fun run.”
The bridge will close at 8 a.m., one hour before the run begins. City staff said roads will open as soon as the last racers clear the bridge, usually around 9:45 a.m. The rest of the course should be open again by 10:30 a.m.
The race starts at the Lampson office building at 607 E. Columbia Dr., on the south end of the cable bridge in Kennewick.
Participants are encouraged to park at the Benton County Fairgrounds and take free shuttle buses to the starting line. The shuttles, provided by Ben Franklin Transit, begin running at 7 a.m.
At the finish line at the Lampson yard, the first 2,200 participants will receive a medal. There will be refreshments available before participants catch a shuttle back to the fairgrounds.
The first shuttle leaves the finish line around 10 a.m. One-mile runners will be shuttled to the 5K and 10K finish line starting at 9:30 a.m.
This year marks the start of a new series of medals. Participants can collect every medal for the next four years. When they are stacked together, the medals will create a design featuring the cable bridge.
