R&B musical set Feb. 26 at Ochoa Middle School in Pasco
Ochoa Middle School is presenting Fields, Freedom, and Funk – Tracing the Roots of Modern R&B through Story, Song, and Dance on Feb. 26.
Showtimes are at 3 and 6 p.m. in the Pasco school’s cafeteria.
The musical centers on Lula Hardaway and her son, Stevie Wonder.
It was written by Ochoa choir teacher Heidi Nelson, based on the book Blind Faith by Dennis Love and Stacy Brown.
The musical first was presented in 2013 but has some additional scenes and surprises, a news release said.
“Through Lula and Stevie’s journeys, performers explore the R&B genre from its African roots through its incarnations in field holler, work songs, spirituals, gospel music, blues, soul, civil rights songs and rap,” the release said. The finale centers on events in Selma during the Civil Rights movement and features the New Hope gospel choir, directed by Eloise Sparks, plus some Ochoa alumni.
Ochoa art teacher Esther Chavez helped with the sets.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students 12 years and younger. They’re available from students and at the school.
Proceeds will go toward a student field trip to see Motown the Musical in Seattle.
Ochoa is at 1801 E Sheppard St.
