LIGO Hanford Observatory tours offered Feb. 13 and 26

A tabletop model demonstrates how lasers are used in the 2 1/2 mile tunnels at LIGO. The laser beam on the right is split and sent to mirrors on the left and lower right to bounce back to the center. Because the mirrors are not at exactly the same distance, the light spot appears on the wall.
