From a sweeping piece linked to Finland’s fight for independence from Russia, to a buoyant work infused with Mexican folk flavor, to a triptych celebrating America’s revolutionary spirit — Mid-Columbia Symphony’s latest concert highlights national pride.

The concert, called Nationalism, is at 3 p.m. Jan. 31 in the auditorium at Richland High School.

It’s the third concert in the symphony’s Season of Symphonies. Each has its own theme, from passion to elegance, history and faith.

Nicholas Wallin, the symphony’s conductor, said he liked nationalism as a theme because of the deep repertoire to draw from.

“A lot of the music that we have grown to love — and some that’s less familiar — was written by composers to celebrate (his or her) national or cultural identity,” Wallin said. “It’s really rich for us.”

During the Jan. 31 concert, the orchestra will perform Symphony No. 2 by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, who penned the piece as his homeland sought independence from the Russian empire.

It also will take on Sones de Mariachi by Mexican composer Blas Galindo Dimas, as well as New England Triptych by William Schuman.

Schuman, a modern American composer, was inspired by the work of Revolutionary War-era composer William Billings.

“He called (the piece) New England Triptych because lots of battles of that period took place in that area, but it’s a symbol of all American pride,” Wallin said.

The orchestra will number about 70 musicians during the concert.

No guest soloists will take the stage, meaning the full orchestra will shine.

“It’s just us,” Wallin said. “You get to hear the orchestra in three distinct pieces and three distinct styles. And there is a remarkable amount of talent (in the group).”

Tickets range from $15 to $25. They’re available at www.midcolumbiasymphony.org or 509-943-6602. Season tickets are also available.

Richland High School is at 930 Long Ave.
