CBC opens theater season with pair of one-act plays
Andrew Pogue has taken the stage before, including as Eddie in Columbia Basin College’s summer production of The Rocky Horror Show.
But in the Pasco college’s latest show, his contribution is behind the scenes.
And it’s significant.
Pogue, a CBC student, is directing two interconnected one-act plays, Lone Star and Laundry and Bourbon. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19-21 in the theater at the school.
The production includes some adult language and isn’t kid-friendly.
James McLure penned both one-acts, which are set in a small Texas town in the early 1970s.
(The show) is funny, it’s a little dark and it has a really good message.
Andrew Pogue
director, ‘Lone Star’ and ‘Laundry and Bourbon’Lone Star finds Vietnam veteran Roy and his brother, Ray, drinking and talking on a starry night when Roy gets news that sends him reeling.
In Laundry and Bourbon, Roy’s wife, Elizabeth, gets comfort and conversation from two friends.
A pink 1959 Thunderbird plays an important role in both acts. “It keeps coming back to that car, and how special it is to everybody,” Pogue said.
The cast includes Cooper Wutzke, Chris Garcia, Paul Nelson, McKenzie Kennedy, Victoria Coronado and Christy Valle.
Pogue got his first taste of directing last year, when he took the helm of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog while in Ginny Quinley’s directing class at CBC.
It was a “clarifying experience” he said, in that it showed him he wants to teach and direct theater as a career.
Pogue said he enjoys the creativity that goes into guiding a production.
“That really was my biggest surprise. Trying to find different ways to express things, different ways to get actors to bring things out. It’s been eye opening,” he said.
Pogue said he’s excited for the public to see what he and the cast have in store with Lone Star and Laundry and Bourbon.
“(The show) is funny, it’s a little dark and it has a really good message,” he said. “We have worked really hard on this show, and I think that will come through when people come and see it.”
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students. They’re available at Adventures Underground in Richland, JD’s Time Center in Kennewick, the CBC bookstore and at the door.
