Cali Swag District bringing their special dance moves

When the Blizzard Tour hits town next week, hip hoppers Cali Swag District will be along giving Tri-Citians a glimpse of their hugely popular dance style, the Dougie.

This quartet from Englewood, Calif., is made up of musicians who go by odd-sounding names. There's JayAre, Yung, M-Bone and C-Smoove.

Their hit single, Teach Me How to Dougie, debuted on the Billboard charts at No. 91 and soon moved into the No. 28 position. It held the No. 2 position on Billboard for six weeks before it reached No. 1.

"The song is based on a dance in Dallas," group member Yung said in a phone interview.

Yung and his bandmates are all 20-year-olds who have known each other since junior high.

"We're all across the board with our music," he said. "Though we've known each other for a long time, we didn't form our group until two years ago."

He said the group writes all its own songs and released its debut album, The Kickback, this year.
