Latin Grammy-winning Tejano artist to headline Richland festival
Stefanie Montiel, a Latin Grammy winning Tejano artist, will sing this weekend at the Richland Sombrero Festival.
Montiel has been releasing music since she was 5 and uses her Latina roots as inspiration for her mix of Latin and R&B music, as well as multiple other music styles, according to her website.
The first ever sombrero event will feature music, vendors, BBQ and a decorated sombrero contest.
Along with Montiel, Chiawana High School’s mariachi band, Mariachi Halcón del Río, will be performing to raise money for sombreros.
Sombreros cost $200, and the goal is to raise $5,000 so every band member can have one, according to a news release.
The band currently has every piece a traditional uniform except for sombreros, which is a vital part of Mexican culture.
Jacqueling Cardoza, Vision Inspired Planning member, said this is the first year the sombrero festival is taking place, and is designed to help community members, specifically the youth.
Cardoza said $1,000 of the proceeds from the festival will go to the mariachi band, and the rest will be distributed to other areas in the community.
The festival is noon to 9 p.m. on June 18 at Columbia Point Marina Park in Richland, and Mariachi Halcón del Río performs at 12:45 p.m.
There will be performances throughout the day, including artists Ady Fajardo and Ricardo Oconor.
There is $5 entry fee for the festival, but children 10 and younger get in for free. VIP seating is also available by calling 509-851-3199.
Donations to the mariachi band can be made by calling Karla Lamberto, CHS ASB Bookkeeper, at 509-543-6786, ext. 5605, or emailing klamberto@psd1.org, and can be made through Sunday, June 19.
