Here are the 5 impressive Tri-Cities teens competing for Juneteenth scholarships
The Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Program holds a pageant every year to give high school girls a chance to promote education, self-awareness and more, as well as earn scholarships.
The 20th annual Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant is Saturday, June 17. The program is for young African-American girls in 10th to 12th grades. The scholarships range from $300 and $4,600.
The Juneteenth national holiday is the oldest known celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States.
The contestants
▪ Rawan Osman, 14, is a sophomore at Richland High School and is involved in multiple clubs, including two language clubs. She also participates in musicals. She hopes to pursue a degree in criminal justice.
▪ Alyssa Dunstan, 16, is a senior at Chiawana High School in Pasco, where she is a varsity cheerleader and member of Advanced Leadership. After attending Running Start classes at Columbia Basin College, she hopes to attend a historically Black college or university to pursue a degree in astrophysics or astronomy.
▪ Micah Fitzgerald, 15, is a junior at Richland High School. She owns a small business, “Miss Bri Cosmetics,” and models for the Women of Wisdom annual scholarship fundraiser. She hopes to pursue a degree in anesthesiology or neuroscience at a historically Black college or university.
▪ Razan Osman, 18, is a 2022 graduate and valedictorian from Richland High School, and held leadership positions at the Black Student Union and Key Club during her four years. She plans on attending a Pacific Northwest college to pursue a degree in environmental science and communication.
▪ Valery Murumbei, 18, is a 2022 graduate of Southridge High School in Kennewick and will attend Central Washington University to pursue a degree in education.
Pageant details
Tickets cost $15 at the door for adults, $10 for students and $5 for children. Attendees can save $5 by getting tickets ahead of time by calling the numbers listed on the Juneteenth Pageant Facebook page.
The pageant is at 6 p.m. on June 17 at Chiawana High.
