Arts in brief: Acoustic blues master, The Bachelor Live and more

Acoustic blues master Terry Robb returns

Blues virtuoso Terry Robb will perform March 6 at Brewminatti in Prosser.

Showtime is 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 to $20 and are available at brewminatti.com.

Incorporating elements from the Mississippi Delta, ragtime, folk, country, swing and jazz, Robb is a dynamic live performer with an unmistakable one-man-band sound.

“Exquisite musicality ... unquestionably, Robb ranks right up there with the heavy hitters, a player of dazzling skill and technique ... finger gawkers flood to his shows,” said Frank Matheis of Living Blues magazine.

Oregon native Adam Scramstad, an award-winning acoustic/electric finger-style & blues musician, will open for Robb.

More chances to catch ACT’s ‘Freaky Friday’

Academy of Children’s Theatre’s production of the Disney classic “Freaky Friday” wraps up its run this weekend.

The musical brings to life the adventures a mother and daughter experience when they magically swap bodies and have just one day to put things right.

Masquerading as each other, they must work together to solve the mystery of how to break the spell. By spending a day in each other’s shoes, both learn the true power of love and the strength of the bond between a mother and daughter.

Remaining performances are at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 and at 3 p.m. Feb. 29 and March 1 at the theater, 213 Wellsian Way, Richland.

Based on Broadway’s Disney musical version of “Freaky Friday,” the cast features 34 youth actors and six adults. In the lead role as Ellie is Tayler Riley, who follows in the famous footsteps of Jodie Foster and Lindsey Lohan. Playing her mother Catherine is Ann Archer. Director is Josh Darby.

Tickets are $16 for general admission, $13 for students and seniors, and $10 for kids age 12 and younger. They’re available at www. academyofchildrenstheatre.org and at the door.

Shining Star Pageant is Feb. 29 in Prosser

The sixth annual Shining Star Pageant is Feb. 29 at Bethel Church, 270 N. Gap Road, Prosser.

Fifty-five girls and young women who are differently-abled will compete. The younger girls, ages 5 to 11, will take the stage at 10 a.m., and older girls will compete at 2 p.m.

The Bachelor Live on Stage at Toyota Center

The Bachelor television series franchise is bringing “The Bachelor Live on Stage” to the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

The March 6 show begins at 7 p.m..

The stage show will introduce a Tri-City-area bachelor to women in the audience who are looking for love, with The Bachelor fan favorite Ben Higgins leading the search.

Higgins will guide the bachelor as the evening unfolds from the first impression rose to group date challenges to one-on-one dates until one woman is offered the final rose.

Male Ensemble Northwest leads two singer workshops

The Mid-Columbia Mastersingers invites singers from around the region to attend its Spring Choral Singer Workshop, led by singers from Male Ensemble Northwest (M.E.N.).

The workshop will be on March 7 at McLoughlin Middle School, 2803 N. Road 88, Pasco.

This educational event is open to singers ages 9 and up, and will be in two sessions. The morning session, is 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., is for soprano and alto voices in grades 4-7. The afternoon session is 2 to 5:45 p.m. and is for tenor and bass voices of all ages, including adults and changing adolescent voices.

Participants will learn songs on-site as a group, then perform together at the end of the session. Morning performance at noon will also feature special guests performers Mastersingers Youth Girls’ Choir and Boys’ Choir.

Afternoon performance at 5 p.m. will feature special guest performers M.E.N. Both performances are free and open to the public.

The registration fee to participate in the workshop is $15, with discounts available for groups of 10 or more participants. Registration is online at the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers website, www.mcmastersingers.org.

Male Ensemble Northwest, formed in Longview in 1982, is an all-male choral group with over a dozen choral conductors from the Northwest.

Trumpet featured in Walla Walla Symphony show

The Walla Walla Symphony will perform “Melodies & Monsters” on March 1.

The performance will feature Walla Walla Symphony principal trumpet William Berry as the soloist for Haydn’s melodic and virtuosic “Trumpet Concerto.” It will be paired with Duncan Neilson’s “The Monster.”

Showtime is 3 p.m. at Cordiner Hall on the Whitman College campus.

Joined by the Whitman College Chamber Singers under the direction of Miles Canaday, “The Monster” tells the story of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” from the perspective of the monster with the help of animated woodcuts by Liz Gil Neilson.

A pre-concert talk starts about 2 p.m. in the lobby.

Tickets are $18-29 for adults, $10-16 for university/college students with ID and $5 for kids 18 and younger. They’re available at wwsymphony.org, by calling 509-529-8020 and at the symphony office at 13 1/2 E. Main St., Suite 201.

Prosser wine, beer event planned in March

The 2nd annual Sip & Stroll craft beverage tasting event is March 14 in Prosser from 1 to 5 p.m.

The event includes a walking through historic downtown Prosser with stops to taste wine, beer and hard cider from area producers.

Small bites will be available at locations from a variety of local restaurants.

Tickets are $20 each in advance or $25 on day of the event. A commemorative sampling glass plus 5 scrip for tasting beverages is included. Additional scrip will be available for purchase.

This is an age 21 and over event.
