WSU Extension Q&A: How now does your cow eat as cold weather is on the way?

Q. With cold winter weather likely to be coming soon, we are wondering how much the nutrient requirements of cows change when a blizzard comes through our area.

A. It really depends on things like the temperature outside, humidity, wind speed, snow or rain, if the cows have shelter and can get out of the wind, etc. Here’s a good rule of thumb: If it gets cold with a lot of wind and snow, the nutrient requirements of the cows can double. Here’s what you can do if the temperature is starting to drop and the wind and snow is starting. If you are normally feeding your cows once a day (feeds such as hay), it would probably be advisable to add an additional feeding each day while the blizzard conditions are in the area, as this will help account for the increase in the nutrient requirements. If possible, try to provide an area where the cows can get out of the wind to help the cows stay comfortable. One more very important factor is to make certain that the cows have a continuous supply of fresh, clean water, which is essential so that they are able to metabolize their feed. If you have specific questions about the nutrient requirements of cows and the factors that affect them, your WSU Extension Animal Science team can help you make feeding and management decisions.

Q. How do I enjoy all the delicious food over the holidays but still try to be healthy?

A. Take your time and be mindful to eat slowly, enjoying the taste and textures, and pay attention to how you feel. Using a smaller plate can help you with portion control. Make sweets a once-in-a-while treat, so you can really enjoy them on special occasions. Sip smarter by drinking water or other calorie-free beverages such as unsweetened tea or club soda, or other low calories beverages when you are thirsty. Source: choosemyplate.gov.

Q. Can my youth learn about computers through 4-H?

A. Absolutely. Computer projects teach youth the hardware and software that make computers work, as well as teaching the skills needed to teach technology to those around them.
