66 Years After Frank Sinatra's Original Film, an Iconic Heist Franchise Returns
The Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, and Dean Martin-led 1960 action heist film that launched a five-movie franchise is gearing up for an additional installment.
That's right, a new Ocean's Eleven film is in development.
The upcoming movie will be a prequel, set at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix. It will follow the parents of con-man and heist mastermind, Danny Ocean.
The Warner Bros. feature will star Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper, who will also direct.
"Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows - his parents," Robbie shared at CinemaCon during a sizzle reel earlier this year. "You'll see them in their prime, and in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix."
According to Variety, Wagner Moura is in negotiations to join the cast.
Moura is known for his role in The Secret Agent, for which he earned a Golden Globe and a Cannes Film Festival Best Actor award. He is also recognized for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Sergio, and Civil War.
The Ocean's Eleven franchise includes the original from the 1960s and the 2001
Steven Soderbergh-directed remake, which spawned two sequels (2004's Ocean's Twelve and 2007's Ocean's Thirteen). The trilogy shared a rotating ensemble cast led by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. In 2018, Ocean's Eight joined the universe as the all-female spin-off starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, and Rihanna.
The 2001 picture was a major box office hit, grossing over $450 million worldwide. It was even called one of the "greatest heist movies of all time" by The Week.
The film is currently untitled, while the screenplay and plot details are "locked in the vault." Cooper is producing the movie alongside LuckyChap, which is led by Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, Milan Popelka, and Robbie.
The prequel is expected to hit theatres on June 25, 2027.
