Tribeca Spotlight: Remedy Games ‘Control Resonant' Director Mikael Kasurinen

Generally, the Tribeca Film Festival celebrates movies and other forms of passive media. But there’s more to it than that. This year, Remedy Games made their presence known with an hourlong discussion between filmmaker Nia DaCosta and Remedy Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen about the gameplay and story of “Control Resonant.”

The original “Control” released in 2019 and followed Jesse Faden as she suddenly became the Director of the Federal Bureau of Control, a shady government agency headquartered in “The Oldest House,” a nondescript building in Manhattan, New York. The game famously connected to Remedy’s earlier title, “Alan Wake,” and marked the start of an initiative to create an interconnected video game universe. “Alan Wake 2,” released in 2023, linked back to “Control,” and now “Control Resonant” aims to be the proper next chapter in the ongoing Remedy story.

“Control Resonant” marks a new direction for Remedy Games. Ever since “Max Payne” in 2001, every single Remedy title has been a shooter where the player interacts with the world by firing a gun. By contrast, “Control Resonant” is a melee action game, where the player character, Dylan Faden, uses a transforming weapon called the “Aberrant” to take on monstrous foes in an “open-zone” interpretation of Manhattan.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Mikael Kasurinen about this bold new chapter in the Remedy-verse. He talks about his history at Remedy, which dates back to “Max Payne 2,” which just so happens to be one of my all-time favorite games. I resisted the urge to ask him about the upcoming remake of the first two “Max Payne” games, since the studio is squarely focused on “Control Resonant” right now. He discusses Remedy’s famous Northlight Engine and adapting it for melee combat, and shares lessons learned from the more deeply grounded gameplay of “Quantum Break,” which is officially not part of Remedy’s interconnected universe, though it might as well be. He also talks about his working relationship with Sam Lake, who is Creative Director of the “Alan Wake” series while Kasurinen is Creative Director of the “Control” franchise.

That’s just some of what we cover in our talk, which can be seen in its entirety below. “Control Resonant” is slated for release on September 24, 2026 for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. While players can jump right in with “Control Resonant” without having played the earlier Remedy titles, you can still catch up with “Control,” “Alan Wake Remastered,” “Alan Wake 2,” and the multiplayer “FBC Firebreak,” which are all available on most gaming platforms.
