Rhythm Heaven Groove Brings Nintendo's Beloved Rhythm Series Back After More Than a Decade
After years of waiting, Nintendo is finally bringing back one of its most beloved rhythm game franchises. Rhythm Heaven Groove is the first brand-new entry in the Rhythm Heaven series in over a decade, marking the long-awaited return of a franchise that has built a dedicated fanbase thanks to its unusual humor, memorable music, and deceptively challenging rhythm gameplay.
Originally announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation in March 2025, Rhythm Heaven Groove is scheduled to launch on July 2, 2026. While the game was first revealed for Nintendo Switch, it will also be playable on Nintendo Switch 2 through the system's backwards compatibility, making it one of the Nintendo titles arriving during the transition between console generations.
The Rhythm Heaven series has always stood apart from other rhythm games. Rather than asking players to follow complex note charts or perform songs from famous artists, the franchise focuses on a collection of quirky mini-games built entirely around timing and listening. Success often depends more on hearing the beat than watching the screen, creating a style of gameplay that feels distinct even within the rhythm genre.
More Than 80 Rhythm Challenges
One of the biggest announcements revealed in Nintendo's recent overview trailer is the scale of the game. Rhythm Heaven Groove will feature more than 80 single-player rhythm games, making it one of the largest entries in the series to date. Nintendo describes the collection as a colorful assortment of challenges designed to test players' sense of timing while maintaining the franchise's signature humor and visual style.
Music once again plays a central role in the experience. The soundtrack includes original songs created by renowned Japanese musician Tsunku, who has been closely associated with the Rhythm Heaven series since its beginning. His music has long been considered one of the defining elements of the franchise, and Nintendo has confirmed his involvement in Groove as well.
With its July 2 release date approaching, Rhythm Heaven Groove looks set to reintroduce players to the unique formula that made the series a cult favorite. For fans who have waited more than ten years for a completely new installment, the return of Rhythm Heaven is finally almost here.
