Until Dawn 2 Brings Choice Driven Horror Back to PS5 in 2027
More than a decade after the original Until Dawn became one of PlayStation's most memorable horror games, Sony has officially announced Until Dawn 2. The sequel is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 in 2027 and promises to deliver a new story filled with supernatural terror, difficult decisions, and the branching narrative structure that helped make the first game so popular.
Developed by Firesprite Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Until Dawn 2 is not a direct continuation of the original cast's story. Instead, it is being described as a standalone experience featuring an entirely new group of characters and a completely different setting. According to PlayStation, the game aims to preserve the core identity of the series while introducing fresh mysteries and threats for players to confront.
The story centers on a team of ghost hunters who run a popular paranormal channel known as Dead True. Their online success has largely been built on staged scares and manufactured supernatural encounters. However, that changes when they are given the opportunity to film a fully funded episode for a major television network on an abandoned tropical island. What begins as a career opportunity quickly turns into a fight for survival when the crew encounters genuine horrors lurking beneath the island's surface.
The island hides centuries old secrets tied to tragedy, vengeance, and supernatural forces. As the crew investigates, personal conflicts and strained relationships begin to emerge alongside the growing danger around them. The developers describe the experience as a modern horror story filled with intrigue, emotional drama, shocking twists, and life or death decisions.
Choice and Consequence Return
Just like the original game, player decisions will play a central role in shaping the narrative. Firesprite has confirmed that the Butterfly Effect system returns in Until Dawn 2. Choices both large and small can influence relationships, alter future events, and determine who survives the night. The studio specifically notes that character relationships are more important than ever, with some story branches being influenced by how members of the group interact with one another throughout the adventure.
Another familiar face is also returning. The reveal trailer confirms the return of Dr. Hill, portrayed once again by actor Peter Stormare. The mysterious psychiatrist became one of the original game's most recognizable characters, and his presence suggests that psychological horror will continue to play a significant role in the sequel.
With a haunted tropical island, a cast of ghost hunters in over their heads, and a renewed focus on branching choices, Until Dawn 2 aims to be one of PlayStation's most anticipated horror releases for 2027. And any game that has Neil Newbon of Astarion fame is a win in my book.
