KEMURI Is Bringing Yokai Hunting and Supernatural Action to a City Between Life and Death
Developed by UNSEEN, the studio led by game creator Ikumi Nakamura, KEMURI is an upcoming action game that places players in a sprawling city where the boundary between the living world and the afterlife has begun to blur. The project was first revealed in 2023, but a recent gameplay showcase offered a much clearer look at what players can expect when it arrives in 2027.
Players become Yokai Hunters operating in an urban environment where mysterious supernatural beings hide among the population. Their task is to investigate strange occurrences, uncover hidden truths, and confront the yokai responsible for the city's growing anomalies.
The setting itself appears to be one of the game's biggest draws. KEMURI takes place in Kemuri City, a vertical metropolis described as the city closest to the afterlife. It is a place where reality and the paranormal overlap, creating an environment filled with mysteries, hidden domains, and supernatural dangers. The developers describe it as a world where people believe they may be able to see what they have lost once more.
Fighting With the Power of Yokai
One of the central mechanics revolves around forming contracts with yokai rather than simply defeating them. Players can make agreements with supernatural creatures and then use their powers through what the game calls Possession Apparel. Once possessed, a hunter's appearance, movement abilities, and combat style can change depending on the yokai being used. The system is designed to allow players to collect different powers and develop their own approach to combat and traversal.
Movement is also a major focus. Official descriptions emphasize sprinting, soaring, and navigating the city's many layers while hunting supernatural threats. The city itself contains rooftops, alleyways, underground ruins, and other locations where reality and folklore intersect.
KEMURI is currently scheduled to launch for PlayStation 5 and PC in 2027. While there is still time before release, the latest gameplay reveal has finally provided a clearer picture of what UNSEEN is building. Between yokai contracts, supernatural investigation, cooperative play, and a city suspended between life and death, KEMURI is shaping up to be one of the more unusual action games on the horizon.
