Pink Almost Said No to Hosting Sunday's Tony Awards to Protect Her Daughter's Dream

Pink is days away from hosting the 79th Annual Tony Awards, and she almost didn't say yes.

Appearing on Late Night with Seth MeyersTuesday, the three-time Grammy winner opened up about the unexpected phone call that led to one of her biggest career firsts, and why her daughter Willow had final say in the decision.

'I want to stay out of her lane,' Pink told Meyers. 'She chose a lane that is not mine, and I want to respect it.'

Willow Sage Hart turns 15 today, and Broadway is already her world. Pink and husband Carey Hart relocated the family from Los Angeles to New York City specifically so Willow could pursue her passion for theater. 'We actually moved here because I am an amazing mom,' Pink joked earlier this year on The Kelly Clarkson Show, 'and also so Willow could study theater and experience more Broadway.'

With Willow enrolled in a performing arts high school and attending opening nights across the city, Pink wasn't sure she wanted to plant her flag on her daughter's turf. But once she asked, Willow approved. And the Tonys booking came with an unexpected bonus. 'It got her a seat at the Tonys,' Pink laughed.

With that settled, Pink said she's going into Sunday night equal parts thrilled and terrified, a combination she's coined her own word for. 'Terri-cited,' she told Meyers. 'I mean, I'll probably fall. But that's good.'

Pink is known for her aerial concert acrobatics. Falling, it turns out, is something Pink has a system for. 'My one rule was that I have to make fun of myself as soon as I hit the stage, however I hit the stage,' she said. 'It's going to be so much fun.'

For someone known for performing those aerial stunts at dizzying heights, the confession that she's actually afraid of heights came as a surprise to Meyers, but Pink said the fear is exactly the point. 'I believe in feeling the fear and doing it anyway,' she said.

Her training method is equally surprising. Her longtime acrobatic instructor Dreya Weber sent her to Venice Beach, got her upside down on the bars, and started throwing medicine balls at her stomach while she sang. 'I was like, this is really cool,' Pink recalled.

As for the Broadway community itself (a world that can be protective of its own) Pink said she's found nothing but warmth. 'I haven't found that to be true, at least to my face,' she said when Meyers raised the idea that theater insiders might be skeptical of an outsider host. 'I have found everyone to be very enveloping and welcoming and lovely, actually.'

It's her first time hosting a major awards show. She'll be doing it from the same stage where she won her first VMA back in 2002. 'I'm not a winner,' she joked. 'I get nominated, but I don't win. That was like the last time I won something.'

The 79th Annual Tony Awards air live this Sunday, June 7, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
