Major Airline Suspends Flights on 6 Main Routes- Will Your Summer Plans Be Affected?

If you're planning a vacation, you may have to reroute your plans if you're flying American Airlines. The airline has announced it is suspending 6 major routes between August and October. The airline says the move is in response to skyrocketing oil prices driven by the Iran conflict. Air Canada and Delta Airlines have already recently announced similar plans.

Time to Make New Plans If You're Traveling One of These Six Routes

If you have tickets or plan to purchase tickets for any of the following 6 routes between August 5 and October 5, it's time to make new plans:

  • LAX to Cleveland, OH
  • LAX to Columbus, OH
  • LAX to Pittsburgh, PA
  • LAX to Washington Dulles, VA
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport to Ontario, Canada
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport to Sacramento, CA

Los Angeles International Airport is one of American Airlines' largest West Coast gateways. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is American's second-largest hub and a major player for connecting flights. Even though the suspensions are only temporary, they can lead to longer travel times and fewer non-stop flights.

The LAX to Cleveland and LAX to Washington Dulles routes were just announced this past January, with an April start date. The goal was to strengthen American's LAX domestic flights by adding year-round daily flights.

What Happens If You Already Booked a Flight?

If you've already booked a flight for any of the impacted routes between August 5 and October 5, you will be offered other travel arrangements or a refund. It's recommended to check your reservations directly through American Airlines, and not through third-party booking sites. American Airlines will contact affected customers via email and app notifications.

The airline says none of the route cancellations are permanent. This is just a cost-saving measure as American and other airlines try to deal with rising fuel costs. Jet fuel costs have nearly doubled since the Iran conflict started. This results in a significant hit to an airline's bottom line, as fuel costs typically account for a quarter of its operating expenses.
