'Love Island USA' Producer Reveals How Far Their Matchmaking Can Go

There is a delicate balance in making a dating competition show. You need to make sure there will be interest between the men and the women, naturally. But interference can only go so far when there is $100,000 on the line.

Love Island USA is back for season 8. Executive producer Bernie Schaeffer talked about the show's process ahead of the premiere.

'Love Island USA' Producers Have a Test Run Before the Premiere

Season 8 starts with 12 singles, hopefully, coupling up or showing interest in a bombshell. Their introductions show them talking about what they're attracted to, but there is still a lot of risk.

"We have an idea, but these are real human beings who want to find love," Schaeffer told The Hollywood Reporter. "We don't know how their connections are going to be."

The show does a test run weeks before the premiere, using a mock cast, as in the U.K. version's process. "It's like a sports team where we're about to go and perform, but let's have a practice first," he explained. "It gets us to get really locked into the season in terms of the technical aspect of the show, which is huge - a lot of moving parts, but also it allows us to test a bit of the creative."

Of course, finding a match isn't the only important aspect of the game. Fans vote for their favorite couples to keep them safe from being dumped on the island. Other times, it's the other islanders who decide who to dump from the show. Hopefully, the cast can form strong connections to keep them safe.

Love Island USA Season 8 streams on Peacock starting June 2 at 9 p.m. ET.
