Stray Arrives On Nintendo Switch 2 With Several Upgrades

Few indie games managed to capture mainstream attention quite like Stray. When BlueTwelve Studio and Annapurna Interactive released the cat-focused adventure in 2022, it quickly became one of the year's biggest surprise hits. Its combination of atmospheric world design, emotional storytelling, and the simple novelty of playing as a stray cat helped it stand out in an industry crowded with larger franchises. Now, the game has arrived on Nintendo Switch 2, bringing technical upgrades and introducing the experience to a new audience on Nintendo's latest hardware.

Originally launched on PlayStation and PC before expanding to Xbox and the original Nintendo Switch, Stray places players in the role of a lost cat navigating a decaying cyberpunk city populated almost entirely by robots. Separated from its family, the cat must explore dangerous environments, solve puzzles, avoid hostile creatures, and uncover the secrets hidden beneath the city while searching for a way home. The game's emotional tone and unique perspective helped make it one of the most discussed indie releases of its generation.

The Nintendo Switch 2 edition launched on May 28, 2026, and includes several technical improvements compared to the previous Switch version. Annapurna Interactive confirmed that the new release supports upgraded visuals, 4K resolution output, improved frame rates, and mouse control functionality using the Switch 2's hardware features. These enhancements aim to bring the portable version closer to the visual quality seen on more powerful platforms.

Another notable addition is mouse control support. While the game remains fundamentally designed around traditional movement and exploration, Nintendo's new control options allow players to interact with the experience in different ways. This feature has become one of the recurring talking points surrounding several third-party Switch 2 releases.

A Beloved Indie Game Finds New Life

The release has not been entirely without controversy. Shortly after launch, some players noticed that the promised upgrade path for existing Switch owners was not functioning correctly. Annapurna later confirmed that a backend eShop error prevented the intended discount from being applied and stated that it was working with Nintendo to resolve the issue. Community discussions quickly emerged online as players tried to determine whether the upgrade would be free or require an additional purchase.

Despite those launch complications, interest in the Switch 2 version remains strong. Many players see the release as an opportunity to revisit one of the most memorable indie games of the past few years with improved performance. Discussions across Nintendo communities have frequently focused on the upgraded visuals and the chance to experience the game's cyberpunk world on newer hardware.

With its Nintendo Switch 2 release now available, Stray gains another opportunity to reach new players while giving longtime fans a technically enhanced version of one of the most distinctive indie adventures of the modern era. Whether experienced for the first time or revisited years later, the journey through its lonely cyberpunk city remains as memorable as ever.
