Stigmatum Is A Cyberpunk Beat 'Em Up That Trades Neon Excess For Survival And Revenge

Cyberpunk games often focus on giant corporations, futuristic technology, and sprawling open worlds, but Stigmatum takes a more direct and personal approach. Developed by Onlyherogames, the upcoming action title combines 2.5D beat 'em up combat with a dystopian science fiction setting inspired by a fractured version of Spain. Rather than placing players in the role of a powerful mercenary or hacker, the game follows a man who has lost everything and is forced to fight his way through a society that has already condemned him.

Players take control of Mateo, a former member of society's elite who has been framed for a crime he did not commit. Cast out and hunted by the system that once protected him, Mateo begins a journey to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy while battling through dangerous districts, hostile factions, and increasingly deadly enemies. The setup leans heavily into themes of corruption, social division, and institutional control, all common ideas within the cyberpunk genre.

What immediately stands out about Stigmatum is its visual presentation. The game combines pixel art with 2.5D environments, creating a look that feels both retro and modern. The screenshots and gameplay footage showcase dark urban environments illuminated by neon lights, industrial wastelands, and densely packed city streets. Instead of aiming for photorealism, the developers appear focused on atmosphere and style, using detailed pixel graphics to give the world a distinct identity.

Combat serves as the core of the experience. Players can chain together light and heavy attacks, grab enemies, perform throws, dodge incoming strikes, block attacks, and execute parries. The system seems designed around maintaining control of encounters rather than simply button mashing through waves of opponents. Enemy variety also plays a major role, with fast attackers, armored units, standard fighters, and bosses all requiring different approaches.

A Dystopian Spain Sets It Apart

One of the most interesting aspects of Stigmatum is its setting. While many cyberpunk games borrow heavily from futuristic versions of American or East Asian cities, Stigmatum takes place in a divided Spain. Locations inspired by cities such as Madrid and Barcelona are featured alongside dangerous wastelands and heavily controlled elite districts. This gives the game a different cultural identity than many of its genre contemporaries.

The narrative also appears to place significant emphasis on player choice. The Steam description confirms that multiple endings will be available, suggesting that decisions made throughout the story may influence Mateo's fate and the outcome of his struggle against the system pursuing him.

With no release date announced yet, Stigmatum remains an upcoming project, but its blend of pixel art visuals, cinematic presentation, fast-paced combat, and dystopian storytelling already helps it stand out in a crowded indie market. For players who miss side-scrolling action games built around combos, atmosphere, and narrative-driven progression, it is a title worth keeping an eye on as development continues.
