Legendary Country-Rock Powerhouse Turns 62

Big hair, massive vocals, and a presence that could shake the walls of the Grand Ole Opry, Wynonna Judd is country music royalty. For more than four decades, the fiery hitmaker has delivered powerhouse performances, rock star swagger, and enough Southern soul to fill an entire jukebox. As she rings in 62 years today, there's no better time to reflect on the remarkable career and enduring legacy of one of country music's most unmistakable voices.

As a teenager, Wynonna became one-half of what would become the most commercially successful duo in country music history. Alongside the late and legendary Naomi Judd, Wynonna dominated the '80s as part of The Judds, scoring 14 No. 1 singles between 1983 and 1991, beginning with "Mama, He's Crazy."

Blending traditional country, Appalachian folk, bluegrass, pop, and blues, The Judds helped bring country music back to its roots, while still sounding fresh for mainstream radio. Naomi's lean and warm harmonies balanced Wynonna's deep, growling vocals, creating the razor-sharp chemistry that made the duo famous.

Following countless sold-out shows, major awards (including five Grammys), a heartfelt farewell tour, Naomi retired from the stage in 1991, leaving Wynonna to spread her wings with a solo career. Reinventing herself with a mononymous title and a rock-and-roll edge, Wynonna became an instant success.

Her solo debut single, "She Is His Only Need," shot straight to the top of the country chart, quickly followed by "I Saw the Light." Before long, Wynonna had racked up five solo chart-toppers, including what is perhaps her biggest hit, "No One Else on Earth," a feel-good country-rock anthem that cemented her status as a full-fledged rock star.

In May 2022, The Judds were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The ceremony was one of the most emotional moments in music history, as Naomi had passed away just one day earlier, leaving Wynonna and sisterAshley Judd to accept the honor through tears.

"I didn't prepare anything tonight, because I knew Mom would probably talk the most," Wynonna said in her acceptance speech, cheekily rolling her eyes. "I'm going to make this fast because my heart's broken, and I feel so blessed. It's a very strange dynamic to be this broken and this blessed."

Always a renaissance woman, Wynonna has also successfully crossed over into television, philanthropy, publishing, and competition shows, while maintaining a multigenerational touring career. The New York Times bestselling author has sold more than 20 million records and continues to command stages across the country, with upcoming appearances alongside Brandi Carlile, Melissa Etheridge, and Maggie Rose.

Happy birthday, Wynonna. There is truly no one else on Earth like you.
